Spa/Hot Tub Measure Guide

Note: You will receive a complete drawing of your cover for your approval before your order is finalized.

Replacing an existing cover:

If you like the fit of the cover you are replacing, simply measure your cover and we will make your new cover the same size. When measuring your cover, measure the overall length. Ignoring the corners and center hinge.

Three measurements are required for a square/rectangular spa or hot tub.

  1. A-Measure (across the hinge)

  2. B-Measure (parallel to the hinge)

  3. Corner radius for rounded corners

1. A-Measure:

It's important to know the hinge direction you want to have on your cover. When you determine the direction you want your cover to fold, take the A-Measurement - the dimension PERPENDICULAR to (across) ]the hinge. Measure to the outside edge of the top of the spa. When measuring the shell of your hot tub, measure to the outside edge of the acrylic lip so the cover will be big enough and the skirt will hang correctly.

2. B-Measure:

Next, take the B-Measurement - The B-measure will be measured along the direction you want the cover to fold - the dimension PARALLEL to the hinge. Measure to the outside edge of the top of the spa. When measuring the shell of your hot tub, measure to the outside edge of the acrylic lip so the cover will be big enough and the skirt will hang correctly.

3. Corner Radius Measure:

An easy way to measure a corner radius is to use a carpenter square (pictured below). Place the square against the outside corner of the spa. The point where the corner curve first touches the carpenter square is the corner radius.

If your measurement falls between full inches, round the radius dimension DOWN to the nearest inch. In this picture, the hot tub radius is exactly 9.5" but you can see how a cover made to 8" or even 7" radius will give a little leeway on the fit. Making the cover corner a bit larger does not impact the insulating performance (R-value) of the cover. If you would like help measuring a hot tub cover with rounded corners, watch the 1 minute video below.

If you don't have a carpenter square, download and print  this template and hold it over your spa corner to measure the corner radius.

1. Measuring for a new square or rectangular cover
If you have questions or if you have any other size or shape spa, contact us at sales@spacoverproducts.com

Three measurements are required for a square/rectangular spa or hot tub.

  1. Length (longest dimension)

  2. Width (shorter dimension)

  3. Any other features such as spillways, infinity edges, or railings.

Waterline Measurements:

The most important thing to know is the dimensions of the actual water opening of your spa.  Using a tape measure, determine the distance from the inside of the coping or edge of the spa to the other.

IngroundMeasures.png
A and B Measurements:

We normally recommend that the cover overlaps the edge of the spa by about four inches all around. So, the size of the cover will usually be 8 inches bigger than the water opening measurement.  If the cover is not square, it is necessary to decide which way the hinge will run.  The A measure goes PERPENDICULAR to the hinge. The B measure goes PARALLEL to the hinge.  See the different options below:

Other features:

For spillways or other features, send photos and as many measurements as you can, including width, depth, and height of the spillway.  If the sides of the desired shape are not straight, provide us with enough dimensions to fully define the shape, along with close up photos of the area.

2. Measuring for a new round or octagonal cover

For round or octagonal spas, measure the water opening, the distance across from the coping or edge on one side of the spa to the other.

  1. The distance all the way across should be the same no matter where the measurement is taken

  2. For octagonal covers, also provide the length of each side of the octagon.

  3. Any other features such as spillways, infinity edges, or railings.

3. Measuring for irregular or freeform shape spas

For cover shapes that have straight sides and are not too complex, a sketch showing the shape and dimensions can work.  Email the sketch to sales@spacoverproducts.com

For true freeform shapes, a template is the best way to get the exact measurements to us. The template should be made using thin plastic sheet, such as a plastic painter's drop cloth, at least 2 mils thick (not the super-thin type).  Lay the plastic sheet over the spa and place weights around the edges to hold the sheet in place tight across the water.  With a heavy marker, draw the outline of the spa onto the plastic sheet as accurately as you can. Mark clearly if the line you are drawing is the outline of the spa waterline, or the outline of the cover you are ordering.  Then write "TOP" on the top side of the template in several places, and then write your name and phone number in marker on the cover.  Then send the template to us at:

We will electronically scan and scale your template to develop an accurate drawing of your spa, then design the cover to match.
